Children in  Year 1 will focus on learning to recall and use their number bonds of 10 and  related subtraction facts within 20.

Children will add and subtract one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20, including zero.

They will solve one-step problems that involve addition and subtraction, using concrete  objects and pictorial representations, and missing number problems such as 7 = ¨ – 9.

Strategies for addition Example
Number stories First there are 5 ducks in the pond.. Then 2 more ducks swim along. Now there are 7 ducks in the pond.

First     Then     Now

5 + 2 = 7

Adding with    concrete objects and then pictures

The children would physically have the 10s frame and the counters before using pictures.

This shows 5 +2 = 7

The counters on the 10s frame to represent and link back to number stories.

Empty number line The children will draw the number line and write their starting number (as they are adding they will start on the left and jump forwards). They will need to make sure they draw the jumps, what the jumps represent and the numbers.
Using known facts (including number bonds to 10 and doubles) The children should be able to recall their number bonds to 10 and doubles (for numbers under 10) by the end of year 1.
